Understanding BPI Building Analyst Pro Certification

The BPI (Building Performance Institute) Building Analyst Pro Certification is a comprehensive credential that signifies expertise in building science, energy efficiency, and home performance. This certification is designed for professionals who conduct energy audits, energy modeling, work scope development and provide solutions to enhance energy efficiency in buildings.

The certification process consists of three sequential steps, with each step a prerequisite for the next:

• STEP 1: BPI Building Science Principles (BSP) Certificate: This foundational step covers the basics of building science, focusing on the interaction building components and principles that govern energy flow in buildings. An open-book, none proctored, certificate exam is required.
  
  
• Step 2: Building Analyst Technical (BA-T) Certification: Building on the prerequisite BSP, this step explores into the technical aspects of energy auditing, blower door testing, combustion safety testing and data collection. A proctored field exam is required.
  
  
• Step 3: Building Analyst Professional (BA-P) Certification: Building on the prerequisite BA-T, the third step involves advanced training and a rigorous examination to confirm the candidate’s proficiency. A Pro performs comprehensive energy audits, data analysis, work scope development and analyzes complicated energy-saving measures. A proctored online “written” exam is required.

Through this structured process, candidates gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on skills in assessing building performance, identifying inefficiencies, and proposing effective energy conservation measures (ECMs).
